You did the right thing. How you went with your customers is exactly the thing that all hosts should, but don't do. Expect LOTS of really great reviews. I have given plenty. Don't bring these pop-ups back. Trust me, there's going to be lots of people heading in very soon in the future.

Although the "pop-up" abuse doesn't happen often anymore, it's still fresh on peoples minds. As far as the text link, it's two fold. Number one, in most cases a text link isn't enough, and a banner is required. In that case, it is more often disruptive to the site. Second, believe it or not, we've had several custom complaints about switching from pop-ups to text-links - especially for people using frames & iframes.

We're still trying to see if the switch to text links was justifiable. So far, revenue is down 70%, and customer sign-ups are flat. I'm guessing it might take a few months for the switch to start working out since the customers we have now are the ones who specifically picked T35 for the pop-ups and not in-page ads. I'll keep you guys posted on how everything works out.

I think that the stigma attached to pop-ups is just like you describe -- the image of dozens of pop-ups covering the entire screen. Although, in recent times, I can't recall this happening to me.

I don't see why anyone (besides advertisers) would prefer a pop-up over a little text link at the very bottom of the page. I understand the the text-link may not flow perfectly with the layout of some pages, but still, I think it's a lot better than the entire page being smothered with a pop-up.
