I’m not sure what’s going on with the internet tonight, but some of the most popular sites around seem to be down! On top of that, host-tracker, one of the larger up-time tracking/monitoring sites is also down (so I didn’t even get an alert about some of the other sites). As of 10:30pm on Sunday June 1st (EST), the following major sites appear to be down:
Digital Point:

Sitepoint:

Statcounter:

Host-Tracker:

I checked with some of the other site owners earlier in the evening and the last I heard is that it seems to be some kind of issue with theplanet’s data center. Then again, some of these sites aren’t hosted there, so I’m not sure what to make of it. If anyone knows what’s going on, please feel free to chime in!

02|Jun|2008 5Statcounter itself is up, but between my several accounts, about 25% of the projects are still loading as errors. Some of the other ones are still missing big chunks of data.
As of 8am June 2nd, I’m still having problems loading all four. Host-tracker has been down almost 24 hours now. Almost 12 hours for Digitalpoint. Very very strange. I also don’t see much discussion about it. No one has mentioned anything on the other big webmaster forums that are still up (WebHostingTalk, V7N, etc..).

02|Jun|2008 6As of 3pm EST DigitalPoint seems to be back up.. but there are many other sites which are still down. Adding to my original list, ozzu.com (another large webmaster forum) is also down. From their site:
“Ozzu is currently down. We are working to restore ozzu.
Yesterday evening at 2:55pm PDT in our H1 data center, electrical gear shorted, creating an explosion and fire that knocked down three walls surrounding our electrical equipment room. Thankfully, no one was injured. In addition, no customer servers were damaged or lost.
We have just been allowed into the building to physically inspect the damage. Early indications are that the short was in a high-volume wire conduit. We were not allowed to activate our backup generator plan based on instructions from the fire department.
This is a significant outage, impacting approximately 9,000 servers and 7,500 customers. All members of our support team are in, and all vendors who supply us with data center equipment are on site. Our initial assessment, although early, points to being able to have some service restored by mid-afternoon on Sunday. Rest assured we are working around the clock.
I am sorry that this accident has occurred and I apologize for the impact.”

03|Jun|2008 9I made a post over a DP about avoiding downtime in the DC fire:
http://forums.digitalpoint.com/showthread.php?p=8000611
-I hope it is helpful for those who were affected by the outage. (plus a shameless plug of my sevice which stayed up during the ordeal - no stats were lost!)

12|Jun|2008 13It really amazes me to see so many well known site going offline. Just a few minutes ago I read a post saying that Amazon went down for 2 hours. And now this…
